I met a homeless man in the streets of Atlanta in the winter about 15 years ago

The pseudo journalism like that engaged in by Alex Chamwada of Daring Abroad (See:ua-cam.com/video/7Tu7dPlzMzk/v-deo.htmlsi=Iw0Jj41fnJbRITAS), is one of the reasons the public is turned off from legacy media. His programs are framed as telling the stories of diasporans but they are far from that. They are really: 1) Cunning infomercials to promote corporate partners of Chams Media (usually SACCOS, banks and individual businesses that pay fees to Chams Media to be featured on the program). So the diaspora story Chamwada tells is not there as a randomly selected feature of what a diasporan or diasporans are doing abroad, but is tied to the fees paid by the person, bank or sacco product being featured. Don't get me wrong, there is no problem with corporates sponsoring programming. But journalists should be transparent, honest and upfront about companies, individuals and guests paying for programming and being featured as adverts to products and services being sold. Daring Abroad is an unethical manipulation of the audience to think the featured individuals or companies are randomly sourced yet many pay a fee to Chamsmedia to be featured. This is called duping the public. It is unethical and deceptive journalism and hurts Chams Media's credibility and news services associated with it. 2) I also take exception to the shallowness of much of Daring Abroad's programming. Take this feature for example on "Homeless in America"! Mr. Chamwada has not properly situated the problem of homelessness in Lowell (a suburb of Greater Boston) for the viewing audience. Homelessness is more than individuals being thrown out by nasty hosts or alcoholism and drug abuse on the part of homeless people. It's really centered on lack of city investment on the mental health infrastructure to support homeless people and societal phobias and taboos around confronting mental health issues. This edition of Daring Abroad simply reinforces stereotypes about homeless people (in this case Kenyans), while denying the audience an opportunity to critically engage and learn about the problem. 3) The piece also highlights lazy journalism. Mr. Chamwada never bothered interview the City Manager of Lowell or the Lowell Homeless and Hunger Commission to find out what the problems with homelessness really are! (If he reached out to the City Manager or Lowell Homeless and Hunger Commission, no mention was made of this on the clip). The piece would also have benefitted from some peer reviewed quantitative data to contextualize the challenge of homelessness in Lowell. 4) US government is very complex as there are multiple levels of city, state and federal jurisdictions that deal with the problem of homelessness. Some of the best government programs on homelessness have failed in Lowell, Boston and Greater Boston more generally. It would be good if Daring Abroad told the audience why these programs failed and what some of the dilemmas city managers face are. How does a country of so much wealth like the USA, and a major city like Lowell or Boston, still have homelessness people? 5) In addition to this, there is case precedent from the Supreme Court on homelessness (See: www.scotusblog.com/2024/04/court-divided-over-constitutionality-of-criminal-penalties-for-homelessness/amp/). The problem is much more complicated than Mr. Chamwada leisurely presents. MA is one of the most expensive states in the US. The average rent for a studio is +$1500, while 1 bed, 1 bath is almost $3k. I rented one bed for one year and barely survived on two jobs. Working 72 hours every week. The following year, I had to vacate and look for roommates.

Kenyans we are truelly something. In U.S we love each other so much mpaka helping each other. But at home in Kenya its every tribe for himself. Maybe going abroad changes us.

Failed marriages must be number 1. I do remember when I was kicked out and the police were called. Luckily I was not violent and all I did was pack and leave. When I got a good job in she wanted me back, but I said no. My advice is do not push it.

I became homeless in America when Ochukah tried to overthrow Moi from power because my tuition money could not be wired. Looking back more than 40 years later, that was the best thing that has ever happened to me. I learned not to be depending on my parents and sought a job in the coal mines of West Virginia. I will be retiring from a federal job in 1.6 years and Thanks God I was Once Homeless. It made me strong.
